Local Food & Drink

Just when I thought I knew how Italian cuisine is supposed to taste, I stumbled upon Casanova Ristorante in Dana Point. After all, how many versions of pasta, tomatoes and cheese can be combined, right? Not since my trip to Venice and Florence have I enjoyed such authentic, fresh Italian cooking. Best of all, I can visit this local spot without having to hop on a plane.

My friend and I were warmly greeted by Casanova’s owner (and native Venetian), Nik Doda, when we arrived at the restaurant. I made my drink selection from their carefully edited wine list and got the feeling I couldn’t go wrong with any one of the house wines. I guessed correctly; the Cabernet Sauvignon was delicious and also a perfect pairing for my main course. My friend opted for the signature “Casanova” martini - a not-too-tart, not-too-sweet chilled cocktail that was refreshing on a warm, summer evening.

For starters, we chose the Calamari Dorati and accepted our server’s recommendation of the popular Melanzane alla Parmigiana - an appetizer-sized portion of eggplant parmesan. The calamari was light and crispy and accompanied by a zesty marinara. The eggplant was both sweet and savory with a chunky, fresh tomato topping. It’s easy to understand why this offering is a favorite among Casanova diners.

I chose the Gnocchi Sorrentina as my entrée after a moment or two of indecisiveness. The dish was a perfect example of how a few simple ingredients can come together harmoniously. The dumplings were small and tender with just the right sprinkling of mozzarella, sweet tomatoes and fresh basil.

My friend ordered the chef’s choice—the Pesce Giorno or fish of the day. The selection was Chilean sea bass served with steamed spinach and herbed roasted potatoes. I snuck a taste of the sea bass and the spinach—both were sublime. The fish was melt-in-your-mouth tender, complimented by a layer of fresh herbs and juicy chopped tomatoes.
For desert we sampled the crème brulee and a traditional homemade cannoli. The crème brulee was creamy with a delicate, caramelized sugar crust. After a few heavenly spoonfuls, I couldn’t help but be distracted by the elaborate presentation of the cannoli.

I will preface my next comments with a little back story. I love a good cannoli; I might even love a bad cannoli. I have walked 30 blocks in Manhattan to wait in line for an hour at the famed Veniero’s for a cannoli. It turns out; I didn’t have to. My friend and I both agreed that Casanova makes the best cannoli we’ve ever tasted. The filling was thick and smooth and the shell was flaky and crunchy. Suffice it to say, dessert was nothing short of an emotional experience.

Adjacent to the restaurant is Casanova’s cocktail lounge. Featuring a Monday through Friday Happy Hour at the bar top from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., you can relax with a drink while catching your favorite sporting event on TV.

Our evening at Casanova was enhanced by the professional, friendly staff and comfortable setting. The restaurant’s ambiance is cozy and romantic with Italian art and inviting leather banquettes. Casanova is an absolute must-do for foodies, families and couples. Buon Appetito!
